Newcastle Progress

Newcastle progressed to the last 16 of the Fairs Cup, aiming to be the first British team to retain a European trophy.

The game was played in very inhospitable conditions, as there was a biting, freezing cold, wind and at least two inches of snow covered the ground. The football therefore was not of the highest quality but the Newcastle defence were much tighter and their tackling was much more authoritive. Indeed they were in command the whole game. The only goal came from Scott in the twenty-second minute.

Porto's goalkeeper, Rui, received a very nasty injury in the final minute and was carried off on a stretcher.

NB: Porto played in their normal Blue and White striped shirts (with blue shorts) whilst Newcastle played in red shirts and red shorts.
