Newcastle lost the only tie they have played in the European Cup Winners Cup on the away goals rule, with Partizan having scored at St James's.
The European Cup Winners Cup was founded in 1961 for winners of domestic cups (or runners up if the winners were also champions). From its inception until 1994, the competition was known only as the "European Cup Winners' Cup" - from the 1994/95 season onwards, UEFA officially named the tournament the "UEFA Cup Winners' Cup".
From 1972 onwards, the winner of the tournament would go on to play the winner of the European Cup (later the UEFA Champions League) in the European Super Cup. The Cup Winners' Cup was eventually discontinued due to the expansion of the UEFA Champions League in 1999, and the CWC's Super Cup place was taken by the winner of the UEFA Cup.
