First Half
3 mins
Goal
0-1Lee Clark. Clark picked up the ball on the right of the penalty box. Dribbling along the line he shot left-footed from the middle edge. A defender stuck out a boot and the ball looped up and into the net, the deflection completely wrong-footing the keeper.
8 mins
Goal
1-1Neil McNab. Martindale put a cross high and deep to the far post from the right channel. Aldridge nodded back into the path of McNab, in acres of spaces around the penalty spot, and he lashed a right-footed half-volley into the back of the net.
19 mins
Goal
2-1John Aldridge. A horrendous mistake as Scott played a back-pass far too short and far too soft allowing Aldridge to get into the mountainous amount of room to be one-on-one with Srnicek and he coolly slid the ball right-footed beyond him into the bottom right corner.
24 mins
Goal
2-2Micky Quinn. Peacock, in the left channel, played in Hunt inside the box. Nixon saved his shot but the ball bounced free. Recovering, Nixon made a desperate attempt to smother the ball but Quinn slid in and knocked the ball into the bottom corner from three yards.
Second Half
65 mins
Goal
2-3Gavin Peacock. O’Brien, driving down the left of midfield, side-footed a great ball into the path of Peacock. Without needing to check his stride he chipped it over the diving Nixon who was attempting to take it off his feet at the top of the box.
76 mins
Goal
3-3Jim Steel. Pressing hard Tranmere broke into the right of the box. The ball was played to Higgins just above the spot. He was hindered by one of his own men and his shot skewed to Steele to his left who planted it into the top-right corner from 8 yards.
Extra Time:
94 mins
Goal
4-3John Aldridge. Another horrendous error! As an unexpected, high, lofted back-pass from the left channel dropped Srnicek seemed to be caught out by it and Aldridge ran in, chested the ball away from him, and cheekily walked it into an empty net.
96 mins
Goal
5-3Dave Martindale. Great work down the left by Irons saw him cross the ball into the box for Aldridge. Surrounded, he snuck the ball left a couple of yards for Martindale to send it right-footed and low into the right-hand corner from ten yards.
104 mins
Goal
5-4Lee Clark. Peacock tussled with Irons for the ball. Irons ended on the floor but no foul was given. Peacock knocked the ball into the path of Clark. Shrugging off a challenge he hit it low into the bottom left corner with Nixon forlornly diving down for it.
110 mins
Goal
5-5Gavin Peacock. Clark received the ball on the left of the box and shot it mid-height for the right corner. It looked like Nixon had it covered but Peacock rushed in and diverted the ball past him with mere inches between them three yards out.
118 mins
Goal [Pen]
5-6Micky Quinn. Neilson was taken by a sliding tackle from Branch on the top right of the box and a penalty was awarded. Rather harshly it has to be said. Quinn smashed the spot-kick right-footed into the left of the goal with Nixon diving the other way.
120 mins
Goal [Pen]
6-6John Aldridge. A slight nudge on Aldridge and he went down tamely in the box and an even softer penalty was awarded! Aldridge took the spot-kick himself and ran up to it, almost pausing, making Srnicek commit his dive and sent it low in the other direction.

Dumped Out On Penalties!

In a game that saw a dozen goals, went to extra time and then penalties, Newcastle found themselves out of the cup in the first round. But, after all it was only the ZDS Cup so I don't think there were many tears shed.

Extra Time

At the end of extra-time the score was 6-6! So then the game had to be decided on a "penalty shoot-out" which Tranmere won 3-2.
