Benítez joined Newcastle at a time when we were quite frankly in turmoil, thanks to the quite appalling reign of his predecessor McClaren and perhaps the Newcastle board's lethargy in not acting sooner.

He certainly has the experience of managing at the highest levels with an impressive string of clubs including Chelsea, Liverpool and his "home town" team, Real Madrid. He also is a proven "winner" with an equally impressive "trophy cabinet" which includes the Europa League, (2013-05-15) Coppa Italia, (2010-08-21) and of course the UEFA Champions League with Liverpool, (2005-05-25).

His first challenge at Newcastle seemed to be an impossible one - our Premiership safety - which unfortunately with only ten games left did prove impossible and relegation was an inevitable result of a pretty disastrous reign of McClaren. Following relegation there was much speculation as to whether he would stay at St James's Park, or as a clause in his contract allowed, that he would walk away. No one would have blamed him for doing so, relegation was not his fault and the whole team, and indeed club, was in a pretty sorry state and not for the first time!

Talks were held with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, assurances were given, and Benítez decided to stay - the relief across Tyneside was almost palpable - and all now looked forward. Thankfully due to some astute signings Newcastle's stay in the second teir of the English leagues was restricted to a single season as not only did they earn promotion at the first time of asking - they actually took the SkyBet Championship title on the very last day of the season.

Whilst we would have all hoped that it would then be a happy case of "onwards and upwards" you have to remember - this is Newcastle United we are talking about! Rumblings have been perpetually surfacing about whether Benítez would leave due to the lack of transfer activity in the summer window - apparently he is not getting what he was promised and is publicly decrying the situation. Oh dear! He joined in turmoil and we are still, sixteen month later, in turmoil - welcome to Newcastle everyone...
