Burton's Testimonial: 14/05/1973 v Sunderland

Burton was a Welsh international at Under-23 level and played 9 games at Full International level. He was a very versatile player who played in every position in the back-line for Newcastle, he also played in the midfield on occassions and was even played at centre-forward! His forté though was perhaps at Right-Half or Right-Back.

He was a brilliant servant to the club, spending 9 seasons with Newcastle, and was an important part of the Fairs Cup winning side of 1969.

Unfortunately, Burton had to retire from the game, in 1973, through an injury to his knee. In retirement Burton did some scouting for Newcastle and worked as a brewery representative. It is also reported that he owned and ran a sandwhich bar in Norwich.

NB: Burton has the distinction of being the first-ever substitute to be used by Newcastle when he came on for the injured Trevor Hockey in the 2-0 victory over Northampton on 04/09/1965 at St James's Park.
