One of the few players to have played for the North East's "Big Three", Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

Alan joined Newcastle as an apprentice and signed professional papers in November 1967. With his big, powerful frame, Alan was very hard to knock off the ball and he possessed a thunderous shot, with a header to match! He was a member of the Fairs Cup winning team, scoring in the final in Budapest.

Towards the end of his time at Newcastle, Alan's form was quite erratic which led to his departure for Cardiff. He soon returned to the North East however with Middlesbrough where he enjoyed more sustained success. He then had a brief spell at Manchester United (two month to be precise) before moving on to Sunderland, thus completing his "Big Three" hat-trick.
