Starting his career with junior side Armadale Thistle, Tommy soon joined Partick Thistle where he graduated to the Scotland Under-23 squad. Joining Newcastle, bought by Joe Harvey as "a one for the future", Tommy got an early opportunity and siezed it with both hands, hardly missing a game in the following three seasons. Indeed he went on to create a club record, appearing in 171 consecutive games!

Tommy's contribution to the side is often underratted, yet his contribution to the team was vital. His powerful midfield running hardly earned any praise but this created many chances for others around him. In his first season with Newcastle he was a Fairs Cup winner, and in his final season a FA Cup runner-up.

Before returning home to Scotland to become a respected publican, Tommy had spells with Sunderland and Hartlepool.
