David, "Dave", turned down Celtic and Everton, amongst others, to join his boyhood heroes Third Lanark. He went on to win Scotland honours at schoolboy, under 23, and Scottish League level, being considered to be one of the finest prospects in Scotland. On joining Newcastle as Joe Harvey's first signing, for what was a huge fee at the time, there was a lot of pressure on him to perform immediately.

Scoring on his debut, things certainly seemed to be looking good, but as he was bought ostensibly as a replacement for the hugely popular Ivor Allchurch, it would be fair to say that he did not have the best of times at first. However applying himself steadfastly, Dave turned the crowd in his favour and was to become a leading figure in Newcastle's first team. This was none more evident than in the 1964-65 Second Division Championship winning side.

As a 'strange coincidence' Dave's signing saw him complete a full circle tracking legendary winger Bobby Mitchell. Dave and Bobby lived just round the corner from each other in Glasgow, both went to Queens Park school, played for the same local side, Market Star, and both moved to Third Lanark then Newcastle. On Dave's arrival at Newcastle he even moved into the same street in Gosforth as Bobby, who was by then player-manager of Gateshead.
