Keith started his football career with Rotherham Y.M.C.A. and after an unsuccessful trial with Grimsby Town he turned professional with his home town club of Rotherham United, making his debut during the 1955-56 season. It took him two years to win a regular place at inside-forward. In December 1960 he signed for Sheffield United but again had to wait until the following season to earn a regular first-team place. In total he spent five years with the Blades in the First Division making 154 league appearances and scoring 17 goals.

Keith, and all his experience, was brought to Newcastle to ensure a successful fight against relegation in 1966. As the fashion in the sixties was for 'long' hair Keith cut an unmistakable figure with his balding head - even though he was only 31 himself. His impact on the team was equally unmistakable however as Newcastle regained some lost confidence.

Leaving for a player-manager position Keith went to Doncaster Rovers and finally Chesterfield where he completed his football career. As well as being a professional footballer, Keith was also a professional cricketer.

Sadly Keith passwed away following an illness on 02/11/2009.
