Gordon was a goalkeeper that was noted for his bravery and during the 2nd Division Championship winning season of 1964-65 he was an ever-present. His strength and heroics in goal did much to help establish Newcastle back in the top flight in the following seasons.

Prior to coming to Newcastle he had already been a Scottish Championship winner with Hearts, as well as being a triple Scottish League Cup winner, 1959, 1960 and 1963 (he was also a finalist in 1962). Upon losing his place in the Newcastle side to Willie McFaul, Gordon moved to Forest.

Gordon's son, Gordon George Banks Marshall, with a name like that he HAD to become a 'keeper, went on to play for Scotland and become a goalkeeping coach.
