Bobby joined Newcastle as an apprentice but once he broke into the first team he soon made his mark and was appointed as Captain in double-quick time. Indeed he is to date still the club's longest serving Captain. He was of course Captain on that glorious night when Newcastle won the Inter Cities Fairs Cup, scoring three goals over the two-legged final to boot!

He was also a Scottish international, playing 16 times for his country and captaining them nine times, and was an all-round superb centre-half. Such was the service he gave to the club that not a fan amongst the faithful held it against him that he went to Newcastle's greatest rivals, Sunderland, were he spent another season and a half before moving into management.

His first managerial position was as "player-manager" at Carlisle. Whilst he was in this role he literally stole Peter Beardsley right from underneath Newcastle's noses. He retired from playing to become the full-time manager at Carlisle and in all he spent four seasons there (16/11/1976 - 01/02/1980). He then moved back to Scotland to manage Hearts for a brief period before going to Plymouth for two seasons (01/06/1981 - 30/09/1983) then spending a final season back in the North with Hartlepool United.

Retiring from management Bobby became a sports journalist and radio pundit. He is still, and always will be, a very liked character in the North East, and very much revered on Tyneside, to this day.
