John, or "Jackie", had a fine record at Leicester City and had broken into the Scotland international squad earning his one cap in the 0-1 defeat by Portugal on 18 June 1966 at Hampden Park Glasgow. This all led to his expensive move to St James's Park.

Quite versatile, being able to operate on either flank, it was intended that he would supply the ammunition for big Wyn Davies. Although it didn't work out as he would have wished, he did score in the thrilling Fairs Cup Semi-Final win against Rangers, and appeared in both legs of the Final thus gaining a winners medal.

The deal that saw Jack go to Sheffield, saw David Ford come to Newcastle.
