John arrived at Newcastle from Sheffield United in an exchange deal that saw both John Hope and David Ford go the other way. His first season was not the best he could have had, and there were some serious doubters as to the astuteness of the deal. With the arrival of Supermac however John's career took off. For the next four years, they were arguably the most lethal partnership in the First Division, those early doubters certainly had large slices of humble pie!

Unfortunately injury, and a change of manager, saw him take a dip in form which led to his move to Stoke.

It was while he was still a player at Newcastle that John developed his coaching skills, being involved with a local youth side, Wansbeck Wanderers. Coaching was always a desire of his but he never got the opportunity in England to coach at a professional level, it took a move to the USA to realise his dream. Whilst running a pub back in his hometown of Ilkeston he used to spend the 12 weeks of summer school holidays in the USA running a summer camp. The brewery owning the pub did not put up with his 12 weeks "vacation" very well and in 1994 he moved to the USA permanently. He then settled into his coaching role in Minneapolis and is in charge of running a youth organisation, which he describes as being "like Wallsend Boys Club Wallsend Boys Club".

Perhaps little known, but John was also ahead of the game when it came to ensuring he had an income outside of football, in the early Seventies he opened a School of Motoring in Pink Lane, Newcastle.
