Willie, or 'Iam', arrived at Newcastle in strange circumstances - he had just conceded 7 goals in a friendly against Newcastle!

Manager Joe Harvey obviously seen something he liked though and time proved him to be quite right as throughout the late 60's and early 70's Willie was regarded as one of the finest goalkeepers in Division One. Indeed he would surely have represented his country, Northern Ireland, many more than six times he did had it not been for the mighty Pat Jennings.

He was a vital part of the Fairs Cup and Anglo-Italian Cup winning squads, and also played in the 1974 FA Cup Final. In that final it would be fair to say the team didn't perform on the day and in the words of Jackie Milburn "only the goalkeeper (McFaul) and fullbacks played". The 1974 FA Cup Final was a turning point for many of the Fairs Cup winners and Willie only completed one more season at the club as a player and took up a coaching position at Newcastle.

In 1985 Willie succeeded Jack Charlton as manager and was resident in the top job for three seasons. He gave Paul Gascoigne his first start at the club and with Malcolm Macdonald was instrumental in bringing Mirandinha, the first Brazilian to play in the English top flight to Newcastle. Under his leadership Newcastle performed solidly, if unspectacularly, before he was ignominiously sacked after a poor start to the 1987/88 season, thus ending a 22-year association with the club.
