Ron, nicknamed "Cassius", by many wits, because of his 'hustling and bustling' style, or, "Have Goals Will Travel" by others, was quite a favourite at St James's Park.

He was never a shy man, never letting a defender get in the first 'dig'. and quite happy to mix it with the toughest. He was brought to Newcastle, by Joe Harvey, to "do a job", and that job was to lead Newcastle out of the Second Division and in 1965 this mission was achieved.

Unfortunately the move up a division did not really suit Ron, as he was never able to have the same impact at that level and he moved on to Barrow. Spending only a season there he returned to the North East, and Tyneside, to play for Gateshead whom he subsequently went on to manage.
